I am a Consultant Spinal Surgeon providing full-time NHS care to adult and paediatric patients. I operate on children and adults in the planned and emergency setting. My practice covers the full range of spinal procedures and pathologies. I am a passionate teacher of surgery and surgical researcher.

BACKGROUND
Matt Newton Ede grew up in South London. He went to school at Dulwich College where he gained all A's at A-level. He moved to Manchester and had his career defined by his medical training there. Following swift progression up the training ladder, Matt selected Spinal surgery as his specialist area of expertise. Completing first fellowship at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Salford Royal Hospital, he further polished his abilities at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital Oswesrty and Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool. Having spent over 2 years at these four internationally renowned centres for Spinal Surgery, he was appointed Consultant Spinal Surgeon in Birmingham in 2012. Completing fellowships, he took up his practicing posts at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and Birmingham Children's Hospital in 2013.
Since then he has further developed his Research and Education portfolio. In 2017 he was appointed Postgraduate Clinical Tutor, supervising training for all postgraduate doctors in training. He is spinal adviser for training to the British Orthopedic Association, responsible for setting the curriculum for all postgraduate orthopaedic training. He is Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham and the University of Manchester. In 2016 his spinal surgery research was awarded the internationally acclaimed Whitecloud Award.
